Course Description:
Students explore the new integrated role of the advanced practice psychiatric nurse in the context
of health care reform. Integrating pharmacotherapy with brief therapies is addressed. Elements
specific to the role as therapist are analyzed.
Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Describe health care reform and related issues of parity and the role of the PMH-APRN
2. Compare and contrast historical and contemporary psychotherapy models and evidence on
effectiveness
3. Analyze the role of the nurse psychotherapist
4. Articulate an understanding of the psychotherapy process including supervision
5. Analyze ethical and legal issues related to psychotherapy
6. Analyze issues related to integrating psychotherapy with the NP role of prescriber.
